The Host – Review
Based on the novel of Stephenie Meyer, creater of the twighlight series, it is obvious why fans were excited about The Host. When an unseen enemy threatens mankind by taking over their bodies and erasing their memories, Melanie Stryder (Saoirse Ronan) will risk everything to protect the people she cares most about — Jared (Max Irons), Ian (Jake Abel), her brother Jamie (Chandler Canterbury) and her Uncle Jeb (William Hurt), proving that love can conquer all in a dangerous new world. After a soul is injected into Melanie’s body, naming herself Wanderer, she is relentlessly interrogated by The Seeker in an effort to extract information about Melanie’s life and the whereabouts of the other survivors.
Rated originally as a science fiction Romance, I found the story to be more of a drama than anything else. One dramatic event after another made the plot dull and lost me within the first hour. The movie is two hours long, and that two hours seem like a eternity in the movies. Scenes are dragged out way too long and dialogue struggles to get to the point. Another problem seems to be the dialogue in general. Much of the dialogue was silly and inappropriate to the situation. It is not all bad as the detail given to characters and the world of the story was very good and I believe that there was a realistic element to how a person would react in a situation like the one Melanie finds herself. It was also interesting to see a 625 page novel squeezed into just two hours.
The story does have great potential and I believe that the movie could have been better in many aspects. We will rate this movie a 4 out of 10. In short the movie lacks story and exciting events. It becomes very monotonous and is way too long. Please be warned that the movie does contain Violence and Sexual Content.
