Earthquake Hits Rustenburg
We always hear of terrible natural disasters that hit other countries, but in Rustenburg we are fortunate enough to not see great disasters. Earthquakes are something that we hear of but never experience. However, yesterday (10 December 2013) Rustenburg experienced a mild earthquake, measuring 2.8 on the Richter scale.
Anglo American Platinum confirmed that a fall-of-ground incident occurred Tuesday morning (10 December 2013) at their Siphumelele mine (Turffontein). This was caused by the mild tremor (earthquake), measuring 2.8 on the Richter scale. Spokesperson Mpumi Sithole reported that there were no fatalities, but six employees sustained minor injuries. Emergency services and medical staff have been deployed to provide the necessary medical attention.
A 2.8 on the Richter scale can be described as: “Felt slightly by some people. No damage to buildings”. There are over one million tremors of this magnitude per year. This earthquake is nothing to panic about and other than the fall-of-ground incident, no other major damage has been reported.
