Hansel and Gretel: Witch hunters – Review

Classic fairytales and children’s night time stories are making their return nowadays.  Alice in Wonderland, Snow White, Red riding hood and now Hansel and Gretel.  It is interesting to see a modern take on these stories but it is definitely noted that the stories are not like we remember them.  Hansel and Gretel: Witch hunters is simply put not a sweet and innocent story.

Hansel (Jeremy Renner) and Gretel  (Gemma Arterton) are struggling to get over the dark trauma that they endured while they were children.  The events that took place at the gingerbread house.  They have dedicated their lives to kill all witches.  They are notorious for their witch hunting abilities and so they are hired by the mayor of Augsburg.  They find themselves stuck in the plans of a powerful witch who plans to do a sinister ritual on the night of the blood moon.

This movie is not suited for children or sensitive viewers.  Blood splatters everywhere, right through the movie.  I found myself slightly disturbed during the movie because of the graphic scenes.  Although this movie is not all that scary, it definitely is dark.  The storyline, décor and characters make for a very gloomy atmosphere.

It is an interesting and original concept and we do have appreciation for something new.  The effects are good and there is a straight to the point storyline so viewers will not get confused.  The meaningless scenes and sometimes pointless dialogue made me wonder what some of it has to do with the story?  I stepped out of the cinema wondering what had just happened to the time I spent watching the movie.
