High Speed Car Chase in Rustenburg
Members from the Highway Patrol were involved in a car chase in Rustenburg on Tuesday, 22 October 2013 at about 06:30. Two of the three hijackers who previously hijacked and robbed a member of the public was arrested.
A 35- year-old victim and a passenger were on their way to work when the driver of silver Ford Bantam LDV chased them on the gravel road to Kwezi mine. The hijacker stopped in front of the victim and threatened him at gunpoint, instructing him to exit and step away from his vehicle. The other two suspects also jumped from the Ford Bantam and the passenger was assaulted with a crowbar. The suspects robbed the victim of his Isuzu LDV and sped off in the direction of the N4. Both victims were trying to stop people for assistance on the R510 road near the railway line, but to no avail. They had to walk to the police station to get assistance.
The police were informed of the hijacking by a tracking company and gave chase. The suspects fled in the two vehicles on the R24, old Johannesburg Road. The silver Ford Bantam LDV had incidentally been stolen during May in Brits.
At a filling station near Orange Grove, the suspects jumped from the vehicles and started to walk away. Highway patrol members observed them fleeing and gave chase. Subsequently, two of the three suspects were arrested.
The suspects are detained in Rustenburg and will appear in the Rustenburg’s Magistrate court on Thursday, 24 October 2013.
