Two Cases of Murder in Marikana
Marikana Police are looking for 3 unknown suspects after two men were allegedly shot at. One of them died on the scene on Friday, 26 July 2013 at around 19:00 at Marikana Taxi rank.
The victim, who is a taxi owner, was allegedly shot when he got out his car while the other man was standing by at the rank. The injured man was taken to hospital for medical treatment. The motive of the incident is unknown and at this stage, the incident is not linked to previous cases of murder that were reported in the area.
In another unrelated case in Marikana, police are investigating a case of murder after a 49 year old man was allegedly shot and killed on Sunday, 28 July 2013 at approximately 20:00 near Wonderkop Sportsground.
The victim was allegedly on his way to work, when approached by unknown men who shot him with a firearm on the body and neck. The suspects allegedly fled the scene with a white Toyota Corolla with GP registration plates.
The motive of the shooting is unknown and nobody has been arrested. Preliminary investigation revealed four shots were fired and that that the victim is a Lonmin employee. It cannot be confirmed nor denied at this stage that the shooting is related to murder cases reported in the area and linked to a suspected rivalry between National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU). Investigation regarding the matter continues.
