Television has evolved greatly since it was commercially made available in the 1920’s. From the big old bulky televisions we know to the new slim and sleek LED screens, it is clear that television and how we experience it changed in many ways. Used as one of the primary methods of advertising for mega companies and the biggest medium of the entertainment industry, almost everyone has one. But what should you buy when it comes to televisions these days?
Christo from Digital Revolution gave us a massive amount of information regarding television: “It depends on what you want to achieve. There is a variety of televisions available. Size and space you want to put it in will help you to decide on a Television. There are 3 types of televisions available today: LCD, LED and plasma. Plasma Televisions are the best when you want to have a massive television. LCD is currently going out of the market so they will be the cheapest and LED gives you the best image. LED also gives the longest lifetime“. Another thing you need to keep in mind is the actual refresh rate. A higher refresh rate will mean a clearer and more fluent image. A good refresh rate will be at least 100 hertz but the best will be the highest which is 200 hertz.
“Remember, it is not all about the television. A clear image is attractive to the eye but it will not give you goose bumps. Sound is the thing that makes the difference when it comes to the entertainment experience. You have to split your budget into 50% on a television and 50% on sound if you want to have the best experience” says Christo. Something interesting is to see how the prices went down through the years. When plasma television first came to South Africa, you payed R130 000 for a 50 inch television. Today you can get one for under R 6000.
A case study showed that the most popular television is a LED screen. The reason for this is that it is the newest technology, best visuals, less power consumption and it also emits the least heat. Most people have a television at home and use it on a daily basis. If you want to buy a new one, make sure you get what is best suited for you.
